Microwave Tubes by A. Gilmour jr is an excellent introduction to microwave tube engineering and a thorough summary. He covers most of the phases of the field in as thorough a fashion as one could do in a book of this size.

The references are adequate if one wishes to research a particular section more thoroughly/5(2). This beautiful page hard cover book is the first on the history of microwave tubes and begins with inventions that led to this technology; Edison, Marconi, Tesla, & deForest.

There is a chapter on the invention of each type of tube and their inventors; Varian, Boot and Randall, Kompfner, Epsztein, & Phillips/5(4). Electronics of Microwave Tubes presents the fundamentals of microwave tubes.

Microwave Tubes by A.S. Gilmour was published inso it isn't really new, but it is one of the best written microwave books we have come across. It includes some great microwave history, including tidbits about the Varian brothers, Kompfner, Pierce, Boot. He has authored two books: (i) Analysis of Disc-loaded Circular Waveguides for Wideband Gyro-TWTs (Lambert Academic Publishing AG & Co., Germany, ), and (ii) High Power Microwave Tubes: Basics and Trends (IOP Concise Physics; Microwave tubes book & Claypool Publishers, London, ) (with B N Basu as the co-author), and numerous research papers in peer.

Like all microwave-frequency devices using a cavity resonator, at least one of the resonator cavities is tapped with a coupling loop: a loop of wire magnetically coupling the coaxial cable to the resonant structure of the cavity, allowing RF power to be directed out of the tube to a load.
